What is Meta paying Data & Software Engineers and why you should care?

In today's hyper-competitive market for tech talent, it's obviously important to stay abreast of key compensation trends, however, I often caution hiring managers to take mass-market surveys from the "big job boards" with a grain of salt. Why? The salaries are usually so "medianized" they are pretty much useless in reflecting what's actually happening in the market, especially when it comes to emerging skillsets.

So when Business Insider's article "How much Facebook Pays, based on new Visa Applications" popped into my feed this morning, I took notice. Actual Salary data pulled from thousands of Facebook's visa applications from last year.

I know you are most likely thinking, "We aren't Facebook. We can't compete for talent on that level." The reality is, this data reflects the actual market, not just in terms of salary trends, but also the sheer numbers of resources Big Tech companies such as Facebook, Microsoft, Apple, Amazon, and Google absorb, which also highlights the skills that are actually in highest demand.

If you really want to give your Executive team and Talent Acquisition leaders a wakeup as to why you are having such a hard time attracting key hires in the Data & Software Engineering ranks, it's worth pointing out... the ranges below reflect what Facebook is paying H1B visa holders, which is typically on the lower range of what a US Citizen commands.

As you would expect, the article notes that salaries vary based on the position, and the location; with a Software Engineer in New York @$160k, and a Software Engineer based in Texas @$118k.

While the data doesn't identify the number of years experience, nor is any stock information included, the ranges are a useful guide for those of us competing for talent in our "Digital First" world.

  • Data Scientist: $100,000 - $258,390

  • Analytics Lead: $168,000 - $200,970
